Westhaven Marina recognised for supporting world-first international adaptive sailing event
Westhaven Marina has received a certificate of appreciation from Sailability Auckland in recognition of its contribution to the Burnsco 2026 SKUD 18 International Match Race Challenge, a landmark event that brought adaptive sailors from New Zealand and overseas to Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour.
Held from 20–22 February 2026, the regatta was the world’s first international match racing event for the SKUD 18 class, bringing together crews from New Zealand, Australia and the United States in a unique competition featuring both disabled and able-bodied sailors.
Following the SailGP event in Auckland, the challenge showcased the skill, resilience and competitive spirit of adaptive sailors while supporting the broader international campaign to have sailing reinstated as a Paralympic sport for the Brisbane 2032 Games.
As New Zealand’s largest recreational marina and home to Sailability Auckland, Westhaven Marina is proud to support initiatives that make sailing more accessible and inclusive.
The recognition from Sailability Auckland highlights the value of partnerships across Auckland’s waterfront in creating opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in sailing and experience the confidence, connection and sense of achievement that come from being on the water.
Westhaven Marina congratulates Sailability Auckland, the athletes, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who helped make this pioneering event possible and looks forward to continuing to support initiatives that grow inclusive access to boating and sailing on the Waitematā Harbour.
