Three simple shore power checks every boat owner should know
Shore power is something many boat owners plug into and forget about – until something goes wrong, like a breaker tripping or a battery bank unexpectedly dropping charge. Yet marine electrical systems operate in one of the harshest environments possible, with constant exposure to salt air, moisture and movement.
Spending just a few minutes carrying out some basic electrical checks can help extend the life of your onboard systems, reduce the risk of unexpected issues, and keep your berth running smoothly.
1. Check your shore power connection
- Look for corrosion: Salt build-up or discolouration on plug pins increases electrical resistance, which can lead to heat build-up. Keep contacts clean and dry.
- Inspect the lead: Ensure your shore power lead has proper strain relief so the weight of the cable isn't pulling directly on the inlet. Check the cable for any signs of chafing, cracking or other damage to the insulation.
- Locking rings: Check that the locking ring around the base of the plug is free from cracks or splits. A secure locking ring helps prevent water ingress and keeps the plug firmly connected to the pedestal.
2. Help prevent nuisance breaker trips
If your pedestal breaker trips when plugging into shore power, it's often an indicator of a small earth leakage fault onboard rather than an issue with the marina shore power supply.
To reduce the likelihood of nuisance tripping:
- Turn off your vessel's main AC breaker before plugging in the shore power lead.
- Switch on the shore power supply.
- Finally, turn on the vessel's main AC breaker.
Water heaters and battery chargers are common sources of earth leakage if moisture enters heating elements or terminal boxes.
3. Check battery connections and galvanic protection
- Inspect your galvanic isolator (if fitted): Make sure it is operating correctly to help protect underwater metal components from stray DC currents.
- Check battery terminals: Ensure terminals are tight, clean and free from corrosion or acid build-up. Loose or corroded connections can cause voltage drops that may affect onboard electronics.
Taking a few minutes to visually inspect your AC and DC systems before heading out can help identify small issues before they become costly repairs or safety risks.
