Construction and Maintenance Update

Westhaven Seawall Upgrade

A scheduled upgrade to the seawall along Westhaven's northern reclamation is set to begin in early March. Under the leadership of Eke Panuku, this initiative will address the challenges posed by adverse weather events and king tides, which have resulted in significant inundation in the area.

Further details on this project have been shared via email this morning.

Fire alarm system upgrade

You might have noticed contractors installing cables along certain piers to accommodate an upgrade to our fire alarm system, which includes all call points and sirens. This effort is in response to the fire alarm system on our piers reaching the end of its operational life, necessitating replacement.

The traditional tower-style call points will be replaced with modern stainless steel pedestals. The upgraded system will feature one to two speakers per pier, capable of broadcasting fire alarm alerts, as well as voice messages.

The replacement is progressing pier by pier, and contractors have made good progress, completing cabling installation along most of the piers. The cables across these piers are now being connected to cabinets.

Following the completion of the cable installation, all technical and system connections to fire panels will be carried out and commissioned. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-late 2024.

The contractors are doing their best to minimise disruption for pier users during the upgrade process.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this project progresses.

In addition to our regular maintenance schedule, the following tasks have recently been completed or are currently underway:

  • All electric pier gates have now been fitted with water-resistant boxes around the sensitive electronics to increase their watertightness and reliability in the challenging saltwater environment.
  • The refurbishment of C pier is nearing completion, with all through-rods and fittings replaced. Approximately 20 piles still require sleeving. Replacement of through-rods and fittings on D pier is in progress, with no sleeving scheduled for D pier piles this year. Our contractors have implemented a health and safety plan for this work. Please exercise caution when near their work sites and follow their instructions.
  • All blackwater pumps in the marina have undergone refurbishment, and improvements have been made to the pipework. We are in the process of fabricating a new, upgraded aluminium charcoal filter system to replace the old, damaged plastic ones.
  • There has been a notable rise in the number of power pedestals being pulled/knocked over into the water in recent months. This causes disruption to pier users while they wait for repairs to be made, and repairing these pedestals is costly. Before departing your berth, please ensure that you have unplugged your vessel.
  • The lighting on the St. Marys Bay dinghy pontoon has been upgraded with new LEDs to increase visibility in the area.
  • Asphalt repairs have been completed at the Z pier boat ramp, and the large planter boxes in that area have been replanted to improve aesthetics. Please see photos below.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop our marina facilities.
