Westhaven's Open Day
Westhaven’s clubs will be open, there are free sailing, dragon boating and SUP sessions, marina cruises, games, activities, a marine market and car boot sale, and delicious food. Visitors will be able to watch the start of the first race of summer, and there will also be guided dock tours, kids games, face painting, and free sausage sizzles and other delicious food options.
Keen to get sailing? Yacht Clubs open their doors from 10am-2pm, Westhaven North (FREE)
Westhaven hosts more than half of yacht racing in New Zealand and Westhaven Marina is home to three yacht clubs: The Ponsonby Cruising Club, the Richmond Yacht Club, and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Each has its own character and offers something a little bit different. All three clubs will have their doors open to visitors on Open Day. Visit, ask questions, and you might find yourself joining a yacht club, becoming a crew member on a race boat, and joining the fun. No experience required! Hint: when you visit, make sure you ask to see the trophy cabinets - each club’s collection is a piece of New Zealand sailing history.

Westhaven’s one and only car boot sale flea market for used (and new) boat gear. A small selection of marine crafts, and exhibitions from Flux SUP, Riviera, LegaSea, Laurie Collins, Let Them Fish, Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, AJ Hackett Bungy, Auckland Transport, Hibiscus Radio Sailing, Coastguard Northern Region, and Clean Marinas.

Try Auckland Rescue Helicopter’s Flight Simulator, Auckland Bungy’s tug of war game. Watch water rescue demonstrations by Watersafe. Talk with experts from LegaSea about fishing, and learn about how Westhaven approaches marine sustainability via the Clean Marinas and international Blue Flag programs. The Remote Control sailing fleet with show their stuff, and the Superhero Second Line brass band will feature too. Plus, try gutter boat racing at the Richmond Yacht Club! Just about the best fun you can have on dry land, and Balloon-a-trix!
Kids Fishing Competition,11am-1pm, J Pier, Westhaven Marina (FREE)
Invitation only to Seascouts and other boating groups - run by LegaSea - six Phoenix Kayaks up for grabs, all gear provided, catch a sprat and learn about good fishing practice at the heart of Auckland boating.
Have a Go at sailing, paddling, boat rides, St Mary’s Bay, 10am-2pm (FREE)
St Mary’s Bay’s sheltered waters are perfect for trying boating! Thanks to the Ponsonby Sailing School, Auckland Dragonboating Association, Flux SUP, and JC Kitesurf & SUP, all ages are welcome to try dinghy sailing, stand up paddling, paddling hockey, and even dragon boating in the bay.
St Mary's Bay beachside activities (FREE)
Join Watersafe Auckland (WAI) and Girl Guiding Auckland for fun games and activities on St Mary's Bay Beach.
Marina cruises on The Watchman, St Mary’s Bay, 11am-1pm (FREE)
The Ponsonby Cruising Club’s Watchman has patrolled Auckland’s harbours during yacht races for decades, and it’s giving free marina tours at our Open Day, departing from the dinghy pontoon next to NZ Marine.
Ever wanted to join a dragonboating team? Z PIER, 10am-2pm (FREE)
Dragonboating is a great way to get on the water, get fit, and be social too. The Auckland Dragonboating Association invites you out to try paddling and tiki tour the Westhaven Precinct, departing regularly from the pontoon at Z Pier, Westhaven. Just turn up - no bookings needed, and no strings attached. Terrific fun!
Dock Tours, Departing Westhaven Marina Office, 11am-1pm (FREE)
Get behind the dock gates in a special escorted tour of Westhaven Marina. Westhaven’s team of experienced boaties will show you boats of note, and answer all of your questions about getting into boating at Westhaven. The Westhaven Marina team will be taking bookings from the marina office.
Summer’s Opening Race, 11am start, RNZYS, Westhaven Marina
At 11am the Westhaven race fleet will depart on the opening race of New Zealand’s biggest yacht club, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. All RNZYS members and Westhaven boats are invited to take part in this fun race. Watch from the start tower on the Westhaven wall, or contact the RNZYS to see if there are any crew spots available on the day. Race entry is $20 including a free bbq, live music, kids activities, and entertainment. Breakfast will be served in the main hall from 9am-11am and is $10 for a bacon and egg burger and tea/coffee. Boats to view
Flagship Marine, agents for Riviera and Grand Soleil, will have boats on display. You can find out about corporate or fleet racing on the MRX Fleet 11 to Noon Pier E, and talk to the Ponsonby Cruising Club about the miraculous revival of the Mullet Boat Fleet, currently berthed at J Pier. Plus, make an appointment to tour Ohana, Westhaven's only sail-powered cruising charter boat, or phone/email Chris to book a short taster sail during Open Day.
Hungry and thirsty?
Authentic wood fired pizzas and healthy Mediterranean wraps will be served up at Open Day by Stumpy's Pizzas, and Mediterranean Bites. You'll spot a free sausage sizzle (or three), ice creams galore, and of course our usual range of eating outlets will be open - Billfish Cafe, Sails, and Swashbucklers. Delicious!
Special invite for Westhaven berth-holders
Enter the RNZYS Opening Race (no membership required) and join in with a fun family after match function including a barbeque, live music, and fun games, from 2pm. Keen to crew? Contact the club to see if anyone needs help.
Free parking available!
Westhaven Marina has some public carparking available - please just make sure that you only use the white spaces, as yellow spaces are reserved for berth holders. If it gets busy, you can also park in Harbour Bridge Park (west of the bridge on Curran Street), or in Wynyard Quarter or Downtown, and walk, cycle or scooter in via the Westhaven Promenade. The best public transport is to the CBD or the Ponsonby/Herne Bay area.
