Following the storm in January, we would like to share some of the issues that were highlighted in our Westhaven Team debrief.
Warnings were issued by Metservice and by Westhaven, and we experienced a 4.5m high tide (0.6m due to storm surge).
As a result of this combination of king tide and storm surge, four marina piles broke, gangways were vulnerable and one required realignment. Some older piles were found to be too short, and driftwood was carried into the northern carpark with breaking seas.
Our staff resources were stretched, and it became unsafe to use the marina boats, but despite all of that, the team did an outstanding job and attended to failing marina lines on forty boats before and after the storm, and worked tirelessly to secure loose equipment.
This is a critical reminder to please ensure your own boat is secure in its berth. Check and maintain your marina lines, and never leave your boat unattended with loose sail covers and equipment.
Please also be aware that the marina experiences fluctuating power supply during these severe storm events. This means will need to check your freezers, and any other onboard systems that depend on electricity, following this type of weather, and be aware that some marina services including gate access may not be consistent, but that our team will be working to resolve it as soon as possible.
