Users of Westhaven Marina are warned to to be cautious of a leopard seal that is spending time in the marina:
Known as ‘Owha’ (pronounced or-fa), which means relic, keepsake, gift, treasured bequest, inheritance (He owha nā ōku tūpuna), this leopard seal has been living in the Hauraki Gulf since July 2015, and of late has been in the Waitemata with regular sightings between Orakei and Lucas Creek, including Westhaven.
DOC is monitoring the seal’s wellbeing, and asks the public to help them track the leopard seals movements. Anyone who spots the leopard seal can instantly upload the location and photos to a new free phone app, called 'Hector's Dolphin Sightings'. The app was initially used for monitoring Hector's dolphins, but has since been modified to accept sightings of other marine mammals as well, and is free to download from Google Play and the App Store.
