Off the wall action
The Red Bull Foiling Generation came to Westhaven in early March. 32 sailors from 16 teams, including nine from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's Youth Training Program, fought hard in Flying Phantom 18s in the waterspace right off the Westhaven wall.
"Tight quarters racing in high speed foiling catamarans makes for great watching, and seeing people come to Westhaven to watch the New Zealand part of this international touring event, was fantastic," says Panuku Development Auckland's General Manager of Marinas, Tom Warren.
Flying Phantoms can reach speeds of 35 knots.
Sailors aged 16–20 compete in a series of heats on four identical boats of distinct colors until the final race determines the team that will represent its country in the World Final. The biggest youth sailing program on the planet, in 2016 Red Bull Foiling Generation holds regattas in eight countries to give more talented sailors the opportunity to qualify for the World Final, to be held in the USA in October.
The Auckland event was Heat 14 and was won by Micah Wilkinson and Olivia Mackay.
