Is yachting is a rich white blokes sport?
Grant McDuff writes: At the Ponsonby Crusing Club we totally reject that notion.
As part of the PCC's drive to make yachting available to everyone be they young, old, tall, short, wide, skinny, Blue, Red, a Him, a Her or even named Winston, we have a range of programs from Learn to Sail up to the ablity to jump onto keelers for a bash around the Harbour and at times further afield.
In October the PCC Womens Spring Series kicked off. This is a five race series sailed every second Tuesday evening. The boats are to sailed only by ladies even though there is an allowance for overly anal husbands to be abaord purly to assit when berthing and for pouring post race Wines, they are not allowed to help the ladies even if they are brave enough to make an attempt.
With the PCC's drive to make yachting and all it entails available to everyone we have been trining more club members in both racing knowledge and skills along with Race Management knowledge and skills. We are please to tell everyone the PCC ladies have stepped up with great enthusiasum into a wider range of roles right through the Club.
Earlier this week the Womens Spring Series kicked off with nine entries. Only one one boat sailed with a bloke on board and the age range of the crews was wide.
What's more the Race Management for the evening was also all ladies with ther PRO being 17 years old and her very able assitant being a bit older ;)
It was very hard to find much testesterone back in the clubrooms for the aftermatch. In fact the only male who did anything the entire evening was Kevin the barman.
Add to that the Commodore of the PCC is Tania, the Rear Commadore is Kelsey and the place is run by a Dianne and a Karen. The PCC's popular Learn to Sail classes not only have some Lady instructors the programe helped create lady Olympic medal winners.
So next time someone suggests yachting is just for the blokes you can tell them they are wrong, come to the PCC and you'll find it is very much powered by ladies right through Management to sailing to boat ownership right through to winning Olympians.
