Fishing Classic Fantastic
The second Gofuel Westhaven Fishing Classic was a day of family friendly fun that bought new people into the marina, some for the first time in their lives.
Designed as a fishing tournament in which you don't need to have a boat, the Gofuel Westhaven Fishing Classic attracted over 200 entrants, ranging from serious anglers through to kayak fishers, and young Seascouts trying fishing for the first time.
It bought together fishing operators and the marina community for a special day of fishing that culminated in a prizegiving where dozens of prizes worth $30,000 were handed out, all contributed to the event by sponsors from the fishing industry.
The team from LegaSea were there to help promote the message of sustainable fishing, providing a cleaning and filleting service, and sending unused fish parts to its sister organisation, FreeFishHeads.co.nz.
Z Pier's Billfish Cafe cooked up a storm, and live music added to a great atmosphere.
Three Z Pier charter operators - Panapa Charters, Megabites, and Seahawk, entered teams too.
The day was fun and vibrant, the catching was good, and a photo competition bought in a wide range of images from the Gulf.
For 24 kids from New Lynn Seascouts and their parents, it was an opportunity to fish off the Z Pier pontoons - which is not normally allowed under marina rules. The organisation was also thrilled to receive two kayaks from event sponsor Phoenix Kayaks, which will support their delivery of boating skills and on-water experience to many West Auckland children.
